Barry’s Douglas’ eight-performance UK tour (including London’s Cadogan Hall) has been an incredible success and hailed by critics as “extraordinary” (Seen and Heard International) and “breathtaking” (Keighley News).
Barry is the mastermind behind the beautiful score for the animated version of the Five Fables narrated by Billy Connolly and currently broadcast by BBC TWO Northern Ireland. The Fables are Seamus Heaney’s modern translation of the work of medieval Scots poet Robert Henryson and are also available on BBC iPlayer as well as the BBC Two website, along with interesting background material about the production.
Having produced two highly regarded discs of solo works by Brahms, Barry Douglas, an exclusive Chandos artist, now embarks on the complete solo piano works by Franz Schubert. This first volume features two large-scale works, the ‘Wanderer’ Fantasy and the Sonata in B flat major, alongside two Schubert songs transcribed by Liszt.
he created a sense of danger in the first movement with some thunderously massive sounds, pitting the piano against the orchestra in the manner of Brahms’ two concertos. This pushing of emotions to the very limits was just as persuasively realised in the poised poetic lines, with the final Allegro con Fuoco taken fast and furious, and Litton enjoying the risks as much as his pianist.
Barry Douglas must have played this work many times in his long career but in this rendition he still managed to put new life into this old war horse. He was well supported by the orchestra.”
