Barry Douglas participated in the Kennedy Center’s Ireland 100 Festival gala last night, “suspending time” with his performance of a John Field Nocturne.
On Saturday 21st May, Barry will return to the Festival with Camerata Ireland alongside Harmony North and Codetta. The festival, which commemorates the 100th Anniversary of the 1916 Easter Rising, is a celebration of Irish arts and culture that showcases the best of Ireland through music, theatre and literature.
This performance brings together renowned chamber orchestra Camerata Ireland and Harmony North, both initiatives founded by Barry Douglas. Both aim to promote peace and unity while showcasing the exceptional musical talents that Ireland has to offer. Together, they will perform a selection of works showcasing the varied repertoire covered by Camerata Ireland throughout its history, and a new work specially commissioned for this occasion.
Harmony North is a choral group comprised of young people from 11 post-primary schools that uses music to transcend social barriers, change the image of the region and bring the community together. The 190 strong choir is led by choral director Donal Doherty and local poet Michael Longley, CBE. Since being founded in 1999, Camerata Ireland has risen to critical acclaim internationally, embarking on tours throughout the USA, Europe and Asia, and featuring a diverse mix of emerging artists and established musicians, all from Ireland.
Next, Barry joins the Brussels Philharmonic on tour in Brussels, London and Dublin for performances of Schumann’s Piano Concerto in A minor, Op. 54 from May 26th to 31st, 2016.
