Barry Douglas “Superb” at Colston Hall

Critic John Packwood praised Barry Douglas’ recent concert with the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra under Conductor Laureate Andrew Litton.  He writes, in the Bristol Post:

“Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No 1 is probably one of the most popular works written for this instrument. The whole piece is a brilliant fusion of folk music virtuoso piano writing and clever creativity. The crashing opening chords are followed by a passionate theme supposedly based on a melody the composer heard performed by beggar- musicians at a market. Other themes are tied together by a strong folk song link. Superb pianist Barry Douglas must have played this work many times in his long career but in this rendition he still managed to put new life into this old war horse. He was well supported by the orchestra.”
